“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God, and not of us.”  II Corinthians 4:7

Speaking to a large audience, D.L. Moody held up a glass and asked, "How can I get the air out of this glass?"  One man shouted, "Suck it out with a pump!"  Moody replied, "That would create a vacuum and shatter the glass."  After numerous other suggestions Moody smiled, picked up a pitcher of water, and filled the glass. "There," he said, "all the air is now removed."  He then went on to explain that victory in the Christian life is not accomplished by "sucking out a sin here and there," but by being filled with the Holy Spirit.
A walk in the Spirit will simply be a walk in accordance with the Word the Spirit has inspired.  The parallel between Ephesians 5:18-21 and Colossians 3:15-17 is significant. The same results are said to flow from being filled with the Spirit in the first passage, and being filled with the Word in the second.  To remain filled with the Spirit, and thus enjoy His continuing, sanctifying work will mean continuing to be filled with the Word.  The relationship is obvious.
If you long for a Spirit-filled life, you must be willing to let Him have the whole vessel.  You must be surrendered to the Holy Spirit as it says in Ephesians 5:18, “But be filled with the Spirit.”  This filling is compared to a man willfully taking a drink.  He drinks to be intoxicated, or put under the influence of the drink.  If you wish to be Spirit-filled, then you must willfully surrender to Him, and let the Word of God fill your heart and mind.  You will be under the influence and control of the Word of God, and your life will be “filled with the Spirit.”  Consequently, there will be more victory over sin in your daily living, and more Christ-like behavior will be seen in you.

“But be FILLED with the Spirit.”
