"Unfounded Fears"

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

II Timothy 1:7

During World War II, General Patton was praised for his courage and bravery. General Patton replied, “Sir, I am not a brave man. The truth is I am an utter craven coward. I have never been within the sound of gunshot or in the heat of a battle in my whole life that I wasn’t so scared that I had sweat in the palms of my hands.” Many years later, when writing his autobiography, the general included this statement: “I learned very early in my life never to take counsel of my fears.”
Fear is the one thing that paralyzes more people in their pursuits than any other thing in the world. But Jesus Christ has given us victory over our fears!
A friend of mine in college told something that has stuck with me through the years. He said, “Fear means False Evidence Appearing Real.” So often that is true in our lives. The things that we fear are false evidence of things that appear to be real. The truth is that most of our fears are unfounded fears.
A Christian is really foolish if he takes counsel of his fears. Christ did not give you a fearful spirit. Over 365 times His Word says, “Fear not,” or “Be not afraid.”  Yet, many times some false evidence comes into our minds and soon we are paralyzed with fear.
A fearful Christian is a faithless Christian. Faith in God is empowering! His Word gives us power over our fears. What fear could we have that is greater than our God? Live in the light of His Word and overcome the shadow world of fear.
Also, God has given us a spirit of love. Fear causes us to withdraw from others and to distrust others around us. I John 4:18 says, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear; because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” God sheds His love in our hearts to cast out fear and torment!
That’s not all. God gives us a sound mind. Sound means healthy or whole. A mind fixed on God’s Word is healthy enough to spiritually discern things and come to biblical conclusions. Our minds are to be grounded in Godly faith.
Let each of us take counsel from faith in God’s Word, not in unfounded fears!
