"The Fabulous Fabulist"
"The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment." Proverbs 12:19
A fabulist is one who invents or relates fables. In other words a fabulist is a liar. There is no worse accusation than to be called a liar, and there is no worse truth than to be proved a liar. We have all been there. Suddenly we are put on the spot, and the brain whirls in fast motion, and out jumps a lie like the golden calf out of the furnace. We all know the sickening feeling of realizing that we just lied. We also know the frustration of being accused of lying when you know you told the truth. Whether you are doing the lying or being lied about, lying is a sickening sin.
Our society is full of lies. The men running for the highest office in the land are perpetually telling lies, and calling their opponent a liar. We know that the government is full of liars. Not every elected official is corrupt, but every one of them is engaged in either telling lies or accusing someone else of doing it. From the White House to the Statehouse, from the church house to your house, lying is in season! We have become fabulous fabulists. The prophet's words are so right, "For truth is fallen in the street" Isaiah 59:14.
We would do well to remember that our God is a God of truth.
Titus 1:2, "In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began."
Deuteronomy 32:4, "He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he."
Because He is a God of truth, the Lord hates a lying tongue.
Proverbs 12:22, "Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight."
Proverbs 6:16, 17, "These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him....A lying tongue...A false witness that speaketh lies."
We lie when we cover our true feelings.
Proverbs 10:18, "He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool."
Our lying promotes hypocrisy.
Proverbs 26:23-26, "Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross. He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him; When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation." If you have problems with somebody, but you act like everything is okay between you and him, and then you slander him behind his back, you are committing abomination before God. You don't need to pretend like everything is all right when it is not. Go privately to that one and be honest with him, and get it right before you become an abominable liar!
Liars don't last, but their lies can go on for years doing great damage.
The chief priests told the men that guarded Christ's tomb to say, "His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept." The guards took the money and spread the lie. Now that money has long been spent, and those guards have laid in their own sepulchers for 2,000 years, but "this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day" Matthew 28:12-15.
Liars will one day be punished.
Proverbs 19:5, 9, "A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape." Verse nine ends with "shall perish." I believe that refers to Revelation 21:8, "And all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone."
God takes lying very seriously. God has "no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth" III John 4. In our society, it is a light thing to lie to each other. Our kids hear us lie to people when we feel it is more convenient to do so. God doesn't take it lightly when we tell our "little white lies.” Our leaders are filling the airwaves with lie upon lie, and you can mark it down that it will not go unpunished. O Christian, walk in truth! Teach your kids to tell the truth! Proverbs 13:5, "A righteous man hateth lying." Learn to hate lying because God hates lying.
