"The Blessings of the Lord"

Count your Blessings
“The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.
” Luke 12:34

Count your many blessings, name them one by one. There is not enough time in our day to name all of the blessings of God. God has been so good to us, and we ought to name those blessings often. It ought to be normal conversation for a Christian wherever he goes.
Some days, more often than we would like to admit, we talk more about problems than blessings. Our countenances fall, and we feel heavier shoulders, and we are more fatigued when we focus on our problems and not our blessings. We tend to be more negative about our lives, our jobs, our families, our country, or our church all because we are looking at problems and not blessings.
I once read a story about a woman in a foreign country. She had very little and seldom had enough to eat. Her son found his way to America, and in this great land he began to earn a living for himself. Every month he would send his mother a letter with news of his new life in the states. For many months she received these letters with joy and would share the tales of his happy life with her neighbors. Yet, she resigned herself to live in this state of poverty.
One day the son received word that his mother had died. He made his way back home quickly to grieve his dear mother’s passing. He was shocked to find that his reception back home was not hospitable. The neighbors shunned him, and would have nothing to do with him. When he asked them why the acted this way toward him he was scolded for neglecting his mother. He was surprised at this, and tried to explain to them that he had tried to meet his mother’s every need. They asked him if this were true then why would his mother have died from hunger. He asked them if she had ever received his letters, and they said that she had, and she told everybody about her son’s wealth in America.
The young man went into his mother’s shabby little house. He was confused. As he sat at the little table he saw the bright colors of the wallpaper. He jumped to his feet in disbelief. For months he had sent letters to his mother about how wonderful things were in America, and he enclosed government bonds in each letter. Not knowing what they were or what their value, his poor mother had pinned each bond to the wall thinking that they were just colorful paper. She died with $100,000 hanging on her walls.
We have so many blessings laying around while we chose to live in spiritual poverty. Let every one of us stop and count our blessings one by one. Don’t just read about how good things are in Heaven; cash God’s checks of blessings now!
