"Value of a Name"

Robert E Lee
"A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold."  Proverbs 22:1

What does your name mean?  No, I’m not talking about defining your name.  I am asking about what your name means to others?  For example, my name is Daniel Dean Miller.  “Daniel” by definition means “God’s judge,” and “Dean” means “man of the valley.”  Although these are definitions of my names, they do not represent what my name means to others.  When people hear my name something comes to mind; that something is what my name really means.  So, what does your name mean?
Your name does not mean what you want it to mean.  Your name means what you have made it to mean.  In other words, you are known for your actions.  Your name may be Dean, but in reality it may be Gossip.  Your name may be John but you may really be known as Liar.  Your name may be Sally but you may be known as Kindness.  You see, when your name is spoken something comes to mind.  What others know you as is as good as your name is.  No wonder God tells us that a good name is better than riches!  So, what does your name mean?
Robert E. Lee illustrates this well.  After the American Civil War, the managers of the infamous Louisiana Lottery approached Robert E. Lee and asked if he'd let them use his name in their scheme.  They promised that if he did, he would become rich.
Astounded, Lee straightened up, buttoned his gray coat, and shouted, "Gentlemen, I lost my home in the war.  I lost my fortune in the war.  I lost everything except my name.  My name is not for sale, and if you fellows don't get out of here, I'll break this crutch over your heads!"
So, friend, what is the value of your name?  What comes to mind in the minds of others when your name is spoken?  If you lose your good name, you will have lost more than a fortune.  Live up to the name you want to have.
