"Useless Pillars"

Wren's Pillar
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance:  for ye serve the Lord Christ.”
Colossians 3:23,24

When architect Sir Christopher Wren designed the interior of Windsor Town Hall near London in 1689, he built a ceiling supported by pillars. After city fathers had inspected the finished building, they decided the ceiling would not stay up and ordered Wren to put in some more pillars. England's greatest architect didn't think the ceiling needed any more support, so he pulled a fast one. He added four pillars that did not do anything -- they didn't even reach the ceiling. The optical illusion fooled the municipal authorities, and today the four fake pillars amuse many a tourist (see photo above).
Our lives often become like Windsor Town Hall. We place things in our lives that take up space and time, but have no practical value. Think of the time and effort spent in building and placing these useless pillars. After they were in place, nothing in that building was better for it. Floor space, material, money, and time were all wasted. The only thing accomplished was that they satisfied the expectations of others.
Can you think of things in your life today that use up valuable resources but offer nothing substantial in return? Have you added things to your life that only serve to impress others? If so, remove them as quickly as possible. Our lives are meant for God’s service and pleasure. Don’t be guilty of building a life with things that are not useful. Take inventory today and rid yourself of anything that is not necessary for the support of a Godly life.
