"How To Pray For America"
We are facing important days. These are days that need our attention and diligence. We need a national revival. What is our first step?
One illustration of God's mercy and revival among his people happened when Israel had been taken captive by the Babylonians (modern Iraq). Daniel offered prayer to God for Israel's deliverance. In this example, we are taught how to pray for our sin-captive nation.
1 Pray with serious concentration
“And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:” Daniel 9:3
To "set our face" refers to our faith and fervency. We need to pray with every inch of our being. We can fast (go without) from many things for spiritual reasons. Fasting strengthens your prayer life and turns your attention to God. Fasting focuses our faith.
2. Pray with sincere confession
“And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession...We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments: Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.” Daniel 9:4-7
We must confess our individual sin, as well as the sin throughout our nation. I've heard it called "Identification Repentance" when one identifies himself with the sin of his nation and asks God for mercy. We need to confess our pride, covetousness, materialism, sexual immorality, murdering of the unborn, and godless humanism.
3. Pray with Spiritual Concern
Daniel was concerned with the removal of guilt (Daniel 9:16) and the restoration of God's glory (Daniel 9:17-19). Our concern is not for America to be a stronger economic engine! We are not concerned with our personal gains. We are to be concerned that God clears our guilt. Every Christian ought to burn with the desire for God to be glorified! We need to see something happen that cannot be explained by the TV anchors and journalists. Desire God to do His work for His glory!
“Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.” Psalm 106:23
