"The Value of a Mother"

Rash"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies" Proverbs 31:10.

The old English wit, Sydney Smith (1771-1845), once said, "An ounce of mother is worth a pound of clergy."  How true those words really are!  There are many things a mother can do that the preacher cannot.  This goes hand-in-hand with the old saying, "It is easier to mold children than it is to mend men."  If these things are true, and they are, then who can put a true value on a Godly mother?

Motherhood is not being capable of conceiving, and growing a baby inside the womb, and delivering it to the outside world.  That is the natural process of biology that God made instinctive in this world.  True motherhood is found in nurturing and teaching and training of that child.  A mother that meets the qualification of God is she who brings the child up in the way he should go, and teaches the child the things he should know.  In other words, a Godly mother receives a child as a heritage from God, and delivers the child back to God as Hannah did.  I Samuel 1:27, 28, "For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of Him: Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there."  This is the example of Godly motherhood, and how can you put a value on that?

Who is the virtuous woman?  "She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness" Proverbs 31:27.  The Godly mother knows what is going on in the affairs of her household.  She labors day and night to make sure that their ways please the Lord. The Godly mother has the vision of a family actively serving God, and sees to it that the vision is acted upon.  Sin does not have a lasting shelf-life in her home.  She has her guard up for anything that may seek to find its way into the home and injure it.  Who can put a value on that?

The Godly mother prays for her family daily.  She knows that the Evil One seeks to devour her children and sift them as wheat, so she prays to her Heavenly Father for wisdom and protection.  Her interest is not in her own wellbeing, but for the spiritual welfare of the home.  She is not so impressed with the family’s image with others, as she is is keenly aware of the family's standing with God.  "Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised" Proverbs 31:30.  Yes, a Godly mother is deeply interested in what God thinks of her home.  Who can put a value on that?

"I regard no man as poor who has a Godly mother." Abraham Lincoln
