"Happiness Versus Pleasure"

"Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say
well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your
feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an
example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The
servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater
than he that sent him.
If ye know these things, happy are ye if
ye do them."
John
13:12-17
The following devotional was written by Mr. J.
C. Penny in the Christian Herald, during the 1920’s:
Supreme happiness of life cannot be found in any one thing we have or
can gain. Then what is the source of happiness? Happiness and pleasure
must not be confused, because they are not the same. One is built upon
lasting foundations, while the other one is generally found in passing
incidents and experiences in our daily lives.
Happiness is a result of spiritual ideals. It does not depend on
material things or outward circumstances. In fact, things and
circumstances are often mistaken for the cause of happiness, yet have
very little to do with this much sought after condition.
Many people are looking for happiness in the wrong places and by the
wrong methods. There is only one way to find happiness, and that is in
the pathway of service. More money and better positions can never
result in happiness, except as they are used to benefit those outside
of our household. The responsibility that is placed on us is that of
serving others, and in this duty is found the only environment in which
true happiness can exist.
We ought to feel pity for the man who is looking for happiness in
accumulating houses, cars, stocks and bonds, better social standings,
and all such things that can be acquired. Happiness is not found in
them. Happiness is native to the soul seeking to serve others, that
they may have a share in the larger and better things of life.
Happiness is not without, but like the Kingdom of Heaven, it is within
those who serve.

to reinforce the truth
of this devotion.)

144 (notice the last verse); Proverbs 29:17-19;
