"Righteousness Exalteth a Nation"

“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” Proverbs 14:34

        French writer Alexis de Tocqueville, after visiting America in 1831, said, "I sought for the greatness of the United States in her commodious harbors, her ample rivers, her fertile fields, and boundless forests--and it was not there. I sought for it in her rich mines, her vast world commerce, her public school system, and in her institutions of higher learning--and it was not there. I looked for it in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution--and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great!"
        These words are a prophecy come true. As much as it pains my heart, America is falling from greatness. Ours is a glorious nation with a remarkable history. This nation has brought about more good for the people of the world through innovation and industry, and freedom and liberty. How sad is it that now we are impacting the world with Hollywood, wicked music and immorality? Truly, we are a great nation in steep decline. The French writer was right when he said, “If America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great!”
        Righteousness exalts a nation. Righteousness only comes through Jesus Christ. America is in great need of the gospel of Jesus Christ! May you and I become greatly burdened for our people, and come out from among them, live separated lives for our God, and reach out to them with the gospel! A revival in our lives could salvage our country. Our righteous lives could bring America back to greatness. May God burden our souls with this truth.
