The Pause That Refreshes
"Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him." Psalm 33:8
Albert Einstein once said, "He who can no longer pause to wonder is as good as dead." I wonder what the mind of a genius would wonder about! Einstein's mind could wrap around E=MC2, and atomic energy. He could conceptualize the splitting of an atom, and the devastating effects thereof. Many of his ideas led to the greatest advancements our world has ever known. His mind could comprehend concepts and ideas that stretched the limits of human intelligence, yet he made time to pause to wonder. Perhaps the secret of his discoveries is found in his ability to pause and wonder about the greatness of God and His creation. I believe that the more a person would dig into the complexity of the world around us, the more wonder he would discover in the God who made it all.
All of us need a pause from the hustle and bustle of the daily rat race, just to sit and wonder at the infinite space that reaches above us. "The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament showeth His handywork." Think of the innumerable stars and planets, galaxies and worlds that populate our universe, and ponder the Hand that made them. The glory of God will fill your soul, and the awe of Him who stretches out the universe will arrest you. In one moment the fear of the Lord and the awe of God will rest in your soul together. Your spirit will be strengthened, your soul refreshed, and your mind will be stayed on the Lord our God. Truly that is a pause that refreshes!
I believe this is what Carl Gustav Boberg had in mind when he penned the words:
O Lord my God!
When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed;
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art!
