"Is There Not a Cause?"
"And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?" 1 Samuel 17:29
"For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep..." Acts 13:36
Children of today are no different than children of past generations. Children are children no matter what. They are impressionable. Like wet concrete, whatever falls on them is going to leave its mark. Children are perceptive. They are always watching and learning. Even the most disruptive child is paying attention. Yes, in fact, that child has learned that he can disrupt and misbehave and he won’t be punished. He has learned how far he can go in his behavior before action is taken. So, it is vital that parents, teachers, and those who are close to children purposely live a life that can leave a mark for Jesus Christ in their lives.
I am reminded of this truth during Vacation Bible School. I watch closely to see how the children are responding to the message of VBS. Every character, every action, and every detail drives home a spiritual truth that the children perceive. It is our goal that the children learn the truth of God's Word that good always triumphs over evil eventually, and that prayer and the Bible are the answer to all of life's trials. It is our desire that the Gospel is presented clearly to the lost boys and girls, and that the saved children are grounded stronger in faith. The truths that are taught this week will leave an impression on each child's life. So pray with us that Jesus Christ will be seen in all that we do.
I realize what children face today. They are children, but they live in the world we have created for them, and it is very different from what it was a generation ago. Consider this: Researchers at Johns Hopkins University reported that 30 years ago, the greatest fears of grade school children were:
Being in a dark room
Today, children are afraid of the following:
We have a great responsibility to reach this young generation for Jesus Christ, and to help them overcome the struggles of this sin-sick world. How can you help?
Pray every day.
Live a Christ-like life.
Give faithfully tithes and offerings.
Get involved with the outreach programs of the church.
Volunteer for ministry in the church.
Let's be committed to reaching this generation for Jesus, while they are yet impressionable and perceptive! "Is there not a cause?"
