"True Patriotism"

“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”  Proverbs 14:34

“Patriotism is not a short and frenzied burst of emotion but the long and steady dedication of a lifetime.”– Thomas Jefferson
We have all had the burst of emotion when the national anthem played, as the flag was raised up high. There is just something to the star spangled banner, with its brilliant red, white and blue, contrasted against a bright sky, which just sends a thrill through the heart. While I enjoy those moments, and thank God for the grace that made me American, I remind myself that the tingle I feel is not patriotism.  The thrill of fireworks, patriotic music and flag waving is a wonderful feeling, but for many that is where the thrill of country begins and ends.
True patriotism is a way of life.  It is a dedication to one’s country that affects the whole life.  Many Americans enjoy the freedoms our nation affords us, but they fail to live up to the responsibility of freedom.  Patriotism causes a citizen to live a life worthy of his country.  A true patriot does not use the freedoms of his land to live as he pleases, but rather, he uses his freedoms to better his family and his neighbor.  Charles Kingsly said, “There are two freedoms - the false, where a man is free to do what he likes; the true, where he is free to do what he ought.”
Look at your own way of life.  Ask yourself, “Am I living a life worthy of America?  Am I living up to the sacrifice of our forefathers?”  It’s easy to see what is wrong with the country, but hard to admit that it starts within ourselves.  Will Rogers said, “Liberty doesn’t work as well in practice as it does in speeches.”  How true that is!  Liberty often finds its doom in man’s irresponsibility.
Decide today that you are going to look at your own life, and with God’s help, begin to live up to your American responsibility.
