"The Basics of Tithing"
"Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into thy bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again." –Luke 6:38
W.A. Criswell tells of an ambitious young man who told his pastor he'd promised God a tithe of his income. He prayed for God to bless his career. At that time, he was making $40.00 per week and tithing $4.00. In a few years, his income increased and he was tithing $500.00 per week. He called on the pastor to see if he could be released from his tithing promise, it was too costly now.
The pastor replied, "I don't see how you can be released from your promise, but we can ask God to reduce your income to $40.00 a week; then you'd have no problem tithing $4.00."
One of the basics of the Christian life is tithing. Simply put, tithing is giving the Lord the first ten percent of our income. The Bible clearly teaches this principle hundreds of years before the giving of the Mosaic Law, and Jesus Himself talks about it in the Gospels. Tithing is not a law, but a principle. God built tithing into the fabric of human life for man to recognize the ownership of God, and the responsibility of man. Some would argue that tithing is an Old Testament command relating to Israel, and that we are no longer bound to obey it. Well, murder and adultery were also forbidden under the Old Testament law, and clearly we are not exempted from obeying those commandments just because we are in the New Testament. As long as God is the Owner, we are responsible to recognize Him as such. We need to get back to the basics of giving our tithe and offerings unto the Lord.
Someone wisely said of tithing, “Abraham commenced it; Jacob continued it; Moses commanded it; Jesus commended it; who am I to cancel it?” We must see the importance of our giving! When you tithe, you are recognizing God’s ownership of all things, and you are placing yourself under His program. The only consequence that can come from being under the program of God is blessing! In fact, tithing is the one thing God commands us to test Him with. “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” Malachi 3:10.
Let’s get “Back to the Basics” of giving according to our income before God makes our income according to our giving
