"Renewing the Inner Man"
"Yet the inward man is renewed day by day," II Corinthians 4:16
An old, seasoned Christian stood to address a group of young Christian men. He told of the wonderful conversion that took place when he was first saved, and how excited he was to have this new-found life. The men listened intently as he told of how he soaked everything in as a baby Christian. He attended the services of the church, and went on visitation with the pastor. He went to Bible conferences within driving distance, and bought Christian books and helpful material to grow his understanding of his faith. However, the young men were soon surprised to hear this older Christian tell of how he began to drift slowly away from the enthusiasm he once had, and how he backslid to the point of going back into his old lifestyle. Tears fell from his weathered cheeks as he recalled the days of wandering, and how much unnecessary pain he had caused in his own life. Every man in that audience could feel this man’s burden, and most of them had experienced that same thing in their Christian life. It was then that this dear Christian man shared the answer to this all-too-common Christian problem. He shared the one absolute necessity that every young Christian should be taught at the beginning of the Christian life: Fellowship with Jesus each day.
Many Christians backslide and find themselves unable to stand against the temptations of the world and of their old nature. They strive to do their best to fight against sin and to serve the Lord, but they find they have no strength. They have never really grasped the secret: Every day, the Lord will continue His work in me, but only on one condition: I must give Him time each day to impart His love and grace. Time alone with the Lord Jesus each day is the essential condition to growth and power.
“At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” Matthew 11:25-30.
May each of us learn this lesson: Spend time each day, without exception, in fellowship with the Lord. Your inner man will be renewed from day to day.
