Repentance“Neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more: ”     Ephesians 4:27, 28a

Many people think that sin can be dealt with gradually.  They suppose that a man can get freedom from the chains of sinful habits by taking gradual steps away from it.  God has a different plan.  He calls for repentance.  God said, "Let him that stole, steal no more."  A man that has taken $1,500 from his employer is not to gradually overcome that sin.  Under that way of thinking, he would be okay if he only stole $1,000 this month and $500 next month, and so on.  What he needs is Godly repentance to change his heart.

D. L. Moody once gave this illustration:  Here comes a man, and he admits that he gets drunk every week.  That man comes to a meeting, and wants to be converted.  Shall I say, "Don't you be in a hurry.  I believe in doing the work gradually.  Don't you get drunk and knock your wife down more than once a month"?  Wouldn't it be refreshing to his wife to go a whole month without being knocked down?  Once a month, only twelve times in a year!  Wouldn't she be glad to have him converted in this new way!  Only get drunk after a few years on the anniversary of your wedding, and at Christmas, and then it will be effective, because it is gradual!

To have immediate and complete victory over sin in our lives, we must see ourselves through the eyes of the Holy Spirit, and repent from our sin.  Christians must deal with sin in our lives severely or it will destroy us.  Gradual victory is a work of the flesh.  Repentance is a work of God.  Jesus fought the battle for us, and we, by faith, take the victory and turn our back on sin.
