"He First Loved Us"

Humble“The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:”      Deuteronomy 7:7

Too often my heart swells with pride, and I begin to think that I sure bring a lot to the table for God.  I begin to take account of my life and compare it with the lives of others, and before long I see why God would want to use me.  My pride takes over my thoughts and soon a haughty spirit is in full operation.  Before long, I am thinking such things as: "Lord, I realize why You want to use me.  There just aren't enough folks as surrendered as I am.  If everyone would be like me, and have my ability, we could sure get a lot accomplished!"  Then comes the fall!  Soon I'm flat on my back looking up and searching for an explanation of what just happened to me.  How could I, of all people, stumble over such a small temptation?  Suddenly, I am reminded that God doesn't need me; I need Him!  How could I have been walking through life thinking that I was at all needed by God?

The Bible reminds us often that God loves us simply because He is God.  He did not love me because I could add to Him, but rather He loved me because I was hopeless without Him.  Yes, "We love Him because He first loved us."  Oh, the love of God!  He loved me because He is love.  I am nothing without Him, and yet He chose to set His love upon me!  Why don't we take a few minutes a day and just fall down before the Lord and praise Him for His marvelous love?

Oh, love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure--
The saints' and angels' song
.
