“Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.” 1 Peter 2:13-17
The recent events involving death at the hands of police officers highlight a major issue in American society. No, it is NOT a race issue. I know there are racist people living among us, and they are represented by all racial groups. There are some who live to stir that racial pot into a boil. However, on a grand scale, the American people are a diverse people. The main issue before us is not one of race, but of authority.
Authority is the power that God has granted in order for people to be governed. The basic command of God is for us to be obedient to the powers that be. God has put very strict regulations on those in authority to govern people for their own good. Authority is in place by God’s design for “the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.” When a man breaks the law, the authorities are there to punish him; when people obey the law, the authorities are there to provide protection and service. I am thankful for the military protection our country provides us. I am also thankful that we have police officers and sheriff’s deputies to call on in time of danger or distress. I am equally grateful for the jails and prisons that are provided to keep lawbreakers off of our streets. This is how God intended society to be governed.
There is certainly not enough space in this forum to fully embody this issue. Let me just be perfectly clear: What we are seeing today is a rebellion against God-ordained authority. Every life matters, and God has placed a rule of government in place to protect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Your job, and my job is to be obedient to the rule of law. If a police officer orders you out of the middle of the street, move! If he orders you on the ground, drop! He is protecting lives: your life and the lives of others. If he is a “bad cop” who abuses his power, there is a government system in place for his punishment. You and I need not get caught up in the rebellious philosophy of this day and time. Parents, take time to instruct your children about God’s plan of government. Be careful lest you get caught up in the “every man did that which was right in his own eyes” philosophy of today.
