"The Culture and Your Family"
“By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.” Hebrews 11:7
Sociologist and historian Carle Zimmerman, in his 1947 book Family and Civilization, recorded his keen observations as he compared the disintegration of various cultures with the parallel decline of family life in those cultures. Eight specific patterns of domestic behavior typified the downward spiral of each culture Zimmerman studied.
*Marriage loses its sacredness...is frequently broken by divorce. *Traditional meaning of the marriage ceremony is lost. *Feminist movements abound. *Increased public disrespect for parents and authority in general. *Acceleration of juvenile delinquency, promiscuity, and rebellion. *Refusal of people with traditional marriages to accept family responsibilities. *Growing desire for and acceptance of adultery. *Increasing interest in and spread of sexual perversions and sex-related crimes.
As you look over this list carefully, it is obvious that we face these same behaviors today. The things that have lead to the decline of whole societies exist today as the norm in our culture. It is true that these things have always existed in the lives of individuals, or within certain circles of society, but when they become commonplace in the society as a whole the society is doomed. Unfortunately, our culture has eroded past the line of destruction. The modern family is no family at all. Family has become a collection of fragmented families misfit together, coexisting to simply survive. The Biblical concept of family is a thing of the past.
Now, not all is bleak. Societies have gone down this same sinkhole of decay, and yet the truth about God’s type of family still exists. There can still be godly families in individual cases. These Biblical families can pass the truth to their children and their children’s children. Godless societies can be reproved by the godly, but only if the godly stay strong in the way of the Lord. Our culture is in great need for Christian families to become the kind of family the God intended for them to be. We must stand as a direct contradiction to the world. When we begin to follow the pattern of decay, we are losing the only light this corrupt culture has left. Get your home in order! Get some support at this week’s Family Conference!
