"Church Training Kids"

Alive Unto God
"But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth." I Timothy 3:15

I want to spend a moment on preparing the future church.  Our kids will be the church of tomorrow, and if we don't prepare them, tomorrow's church won't be properly behaved.  These things are parent's responsibilities.  Some will say, "I know all this already," yet knowing and applying are worlds apart.  So how can we be able to face our full grown children one day and honestly say to them, "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus" (II Timothy 3:15)? The answer lies in how we train them.

Properly church training kids:

1.   Takes Time
So many parents expect their little ones to behave in church, but they've not trained them HOW to behave . It takes time to explain to your children what is expected of them, and to demonstrate it, and then practice it again and again and again.  Many parents break a sweat in church because the kid is disruptive, and as a result, church loses its effectiveness in the parents’ life, and in the lives of those sitting around them.  Or worse yet, the parent ignores the bad behavior, and the child continues to be disruptive in every service.

Why does this happen so frequently?  Simply because parents won't take TIME during the week to train the child how to behave in church.  Many parents use church time as the training time, and as a result everyone is frustrated.

I remember my wife and I sitting our little ones down on the floor with their toys and waiting until they were deep in play; then we would call their names. If they didn't come the first time they were called, we would go in the room and get their attention, repeat the command and make them obey it.  What we were doing was taking TIME to teach our children to recognize our voices, even if they were engrossed in play, and to obey the first time.  This is called training.  It takes TIME to teach your children what you expect from them, and what they can expect from you if they don't comply.

2.   Takes Patience
As parents we have to get our children's attention.  Proverbs is filled with sayings such as, ,"My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings," "Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend unto the words of my mouth. In a society where people want to believe that every child is defective and has been born with a disability and cannot pay attention, it is all the more necessary for Bible-believing parents to strive to get their child's attention.  Children are born sinners, but not disabled.  Your children need training and discipline, not excuses and medication.  Don't medicate your child for your impatience!  If we do not get our children's attention, someone else will.  If we cannot get them to listen to us, how will we get them to hear the Lord?

Going to church should be a joy for the family.  It is not just a place to show up, endure a sermon, and fellowship afterward.  Church is where we meet to worship, feed on God's Word, be instructed and encouraged. All of this can be seriously hindered by a lack of church training our children. Let's strive together to teach our children to know what it is to be "glad when they said unto me, Let us go unto the house of The Lord"!
