"Revealed By Pressure"

“And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.”

Romans 15:14

The other day I grabbed a sponge, soaked it in water, and went to clean off the counter. When I pressed on the sponge, a chalky liquid ran out on the surface of the counter, and it made more of a mess than what was originally there.  I quickly realized that the sponge I had grabbed had been used for something else and dried out, but appeared to be clean and ready to use. When I pressed on that sponge to clean up the counter, the pressure revealed what was really on the inside of it.
Life is filled with pressure.  From marriage and children, to school and work there are a thousand pressures that are applied to our lives.  If you will just take a minute and look at what comes out of you when the pressure is on, you will find what is really in you.
Paul persuades us to be filled with goodness in verse fourteen.  He explains what that goodness is in the previous verse.  Goodness is God’s joy, peace and faith.  If God would fill us with these three things, our lives would be saturated with goodness. When pressures of life pressed upon us, joy, peace and faith would come out because we were filled with goodness.  Now there is not any mess that cannot be cleaned up with joy, peace and faith!
It is so important that we be filled with goodness, because pressure is going to be applied by life, and what is on the inside will flow to the outside.  If anger or hate, cursing or bitterness comes out of us in times of pressure, then we know what we have filled our heart with.  On the other hand, if joy and peace and faith in God is pressed from us, then our hearts have been filled with the goodness of God.
